Course overview
The Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course is designed to equip individuals with essential life-saving skills. Whether you’re a designated first aider in a small company or part of a larger organization, this course will ensure that you are equipped to respond effectively to emergencies.
Course content
The EFAW course exceeds the full HSE syllabus with additional topics. The key areas covered during the course include:
- Understanding the role and responsibilities of a first aider including preventing cross infection, recording and reporting and provision and use of first aid equipment
- Managing an accident scene, prioritisation and communication
- Basic Life Support and CPR: Learn how to perform high quality CPR including the use of a defibrillator
- Managing an unconscious casualty
- Dealing with casualties in respiratory distress such as choking and asthma
- Providing first aid to a casualty who is bleeding and managing shock
- Other topics based on the requirements of the delegates which can include diabetes, epilepsy, anaphylaxis, heart attacks, angina, small cuts and grazes, splinters, minor burns and scalds along with other areas requested by the groups on the day
- Initial assessment
- Course content will be tailored to the requirements of the group.
The course will be delivered by experienced Trainers with practical hands-on experience of delivering care in front line emergency situations. Teaching methods vary to take account of differing learning styles and include group work, discussion, video and practical exercises.
Course duration:
The EFAW course has a required contact time of 6 hours plus a break am and pm with 30 mins lunch. Normally we deliver 9 to 4 but can also deliver as two twilight/evening sessions of 3 hours.
Assessment and certification:
This course is assessed via the Trainer carrying out practical assessments during the course and a multiple-choice paper at the end of the course.
On successful completion the delegate will receive an FAIB regulated EFAW certificate recognised by the HSE. The certificate is valid for 3 years.

- All trainers have front line experience responding for Ambulance Services

Emergency First Aid at Work Refresher (EFAWR) – £100 per delegate
£1,000 per course of 12
First Aid at Work Initial – £250 per delegate
£2,500 per course of 12
First Aid at Work Refresher – £175 per delegate
£1,750 per course of 12
Prices are per person with no VAT.
In House Courses
Additional courses can be delivered at any time of year on days to suit. Courses can be delivered at our venue at Islesburgh, Lerwick or in your venue in Shetland for an in house course to suit for groups of staff. Courses can be delivered daytime, weekends and evenings.
