Course overview

The First Aid at Work course is designed to equip individuals who need to take on the role of workplace first aider with a range of knowledge and skills to enable them to competently look after an ill/injured person until professional assistance can be provided. The course will equip delegates to handle a wide range of situations.

Course Content:

The FAW course covers an extensive range of topics exceeding the HSE syllabus. The key areas covered include:

  • Understanding the role and responsibilities of a first aider including legislation, preventing cross infection, recording and reporting, provision and use of first aid equipment
  • Managing an accident scene, initial assessment and communications
  • Basic life support and CPR: Learn how to perform high quality CPR including the use of a defibrillator
  • Managing an unconscious breathing casualty
  • Trauma management: Understanding how to assess and manage severe bleeding, shock, broken bones, muscular and joints, chest injuries, burns, dislocations, eye injuries, choking, head and spinal injuries and other injuries
  • Medical emergencies: Understanding how to assist with casualties with heart attack, angina, diabetes, epilepsy, asthma, anaphylaxis, strokes, poisoning
  • Environmental emergencies: Assisting those who are suffering from hypothermia, heat exhaustion and heat stroke
  • Provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries such as nosebleeds, splinters, scrapes and grazes, strains and sprains, fainting and minor burns and scalds

The course will be delivered by experienced Trainers with practical hands-on experience of delivering care in front-line emergency situations. Teaching methods vary to take account of differing learning styles and include group work, discussion, video and practical exercises

Course duration:

The FAW course has a required training time of 18 hours. This can be delivered through blended learning with a 6-hour online session followed by 2 days face to face or, should an organisation wish, we can deliver as 18 hours face to face with the Trainer.

Assessment and certification:

The course is assessed via the Trainer carrying out practical assessments during the course and a multiple-choice paper at the end of the course.

On successful completion the delegate will receive an FAIB regulated FAW certificate recognised by the HSE. The certificate is valid for 3 years.

Cost:

First Aid at Work – £250 per delegate
£2,500 for a course of 12

First Aid at Work Refresher – £175 per delegate
£1,750 for a course of 12

In House Courses

Additional courses can be delivered at any time of year on days to suit.  Courses can be delivered at our venue at Islesburgh or other premises to suit for groups of staff.  Courses can be delivered daytime, weekends and evenings.
