Course overview

The First Aid at Work Refresher (FAWR) course is designed for individuals who have previously completed the First Aid at Work course and need to renew their certification prior to expiry.

This course ensures that delegates are up to date with the latest first aid practices and regulations, maintaining their ability to provide effective first aid in a wide range of emergency situations.

Course content

The FAW Refresher course refreshes the full range of topics exceeding the HSE syllabus.
The key areas covered include:

Understanding the role and responsibilities of a first aider including legislation, preventing cross infection, recording and reporting, provision and use of first aid equipment
Managing an accident scene, initial assessment and communications
Basic life support and CPR: Learn how to perform high quality CPR including the use of a defibrillator
Managing an unconscious breathing casualty
Trauma management: Understanding how to assess and manage severe bleeding, shock, broken bones, muscular and joints, chest injuries, burns, dislocations, eye injuries, choking, head and spinal injuries and other injuries
Medical emergencies: Understanding how to assist with casualties with heart attack, angina, diabetes, epilepsy, asthma, anaphylaxis, strokes, poisoning
Environmental emergencies: Assisting those who are suffering from hypothermia, heat exhaustion and heat stroke
Provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries such as nosebleeds, splinters, scrapes and grazes, strains and sprains, fainting and minor burns and scalds

The course will be delivered by experienced Trainers with practical hands-on experience of delivering care in front-line emergency situations. Teaching methods vary to take account of differing learning styles and include group work, discussion, video and practical exercises.

Assessment and certification

The course is assessed via the Trainer carrying out practical assessments during the course and a multiple-choice paper at the end of the course.

On successful completion the delegate will receive a renewed FAIB regulated FAW certificate recognised by the HSE valid for another 3 years.

Our office is based within Aberdeen. However, our courses can be delivered across the UK.

We are able to deliver courses at any time of the year and can work with you to provide training on days that suit your group/staff.

We can schedule the course to be delivered during the daytime, weekends and/or evenings.

Course duration and cost

The FAWR course has a required contact time of 12 hours with the Trainer. We normally deliver the course from 9 to 4 allowing for 30 min lunch and short break am and pm, but can deliver over evenings and weekends.
