Course overview

The emergency sports first aid course is designed for coaches and managers who are required to hold a first aid qualification for their team. The course is SYFA recognised but is suitable for all sports activities. This course will ensure that you are equipped to deal with a wide range of situations that may arise in your activity.

Course content

The Emergency Sports First Aid course covers an extensive range of topics to meet the requirements of the SYFA :

Understanding the role and responsibility of a first aider in a sports environment including preventing cross infection, recording and reporting and the provision and use of first aid equipment along with establishing consent
Managing an accident scene, prioritization and communication
Initial assessment
Basic life support and CPR. Learn to perform high quality CPR including children and infants along with the use of a defibrillator
Managing an unconscious casualty, secondary survey and recovery position
Dealing with casualties in respiratory distress such as choking and asthma
Providing first aid to a casualty who is bleeding and managing shock
Recognising and treating major conditions including epilepsy, diabetes, heart attack/angina and concussion/compression (including reference to the Berlin Concussion Consensus)
Recognising and treatment of minor conditions including scrapes and grazes, splinters, nosebleeds, facial injuries, bites and stings, minor burns and scalds
Managing injuries to limbs including strains and sprains, broken bones and spinal injuries

The course will be delivered by experienced Trainers with practical hands-on experience of delivering care in front-line emergency situations. Teaching methods vary to take account of differing learning styles and include group work, discussion, video and practical exercises.

Assessment and certification

The course is assessed via the Trainer carrying out practical assessments during the course and a multiple-choice paper at the end of the course.

On successful completion the delegate will receive an FAIB regulated Advanced Sports First Aid certificate recognised by the SYFA. The certificate is valid for 3 years.

Course duration and cost

The Advanced Sports First Aid course has a required contact time of 12 hours. This can be delivered at weekends either on two Saturdays, two Sundays, or a whole weekend. The course can also be held over 4 evenings.
